ODESSA--An Odessa neighborhood still reeling, after a weekend ruckus lands some prominent residents behind bars.
As if the initial shock of what happened wasn't enough, folks along the 600 block of East 36th tell NewsWest 9, they couldn't believe it when they found out who it was, that police say, commited the crime.
"It was shocking, just strange," Odessa Resident, Kenneth Smith, said.
Former Permian football star and Odessa lawyer Brian Chavez, his brother Jacob, along with Bowie Junior High Football Coach, Stanley Wilkins and Rosemary Soto, were all arrested for busting into a home on East 36th and attacking the people inside.
According to Smith, "I came outside and I see a bunch of people in front of my neighbor's house. I called the cops real fast and not even a few minutes later, I saw one squad car show up and a few minutes later, all the other ones showed up, along with the ambulance and fire truck."
Smith said the victims have been his neighbors for abour a year. They've become close friends and he was concerned for their saftey, "Hopefully somebody didn't get stabbed. One of my friends got cut up, not very bad. He's okay."
According to police reports, the victims knew their attackers, but didn't give them permission to enter the house. The Chavez brothers, Wilkins and Soto, are charged with burglary of a habitation and paid $7,500 each to get out of jail.
Smith says, regardless of who they are, they deserve a just punishment, "It's pretty messed up, how, if you're at home, and you're not doing nothing, just watching TV and you got your own kids and you're in your own house and someone just broke in your door. What would you actually do?"
Smith adds, he hopes this isn't a sign of things to come in what he calls a normally quiet neighborhood, "Nothing really bad happens around this block. It's kind of strange, how that day and that night, it happened right there, so fast. It's strange for this neighborhood."
According to ECISD officials, Stan Wilkins will remain on paid administrative leave until Odessa Police complete their investigation. Brian Chavez was not available for comment.
