The 61st Annual Midland Women's City Golf Tournament tees off at Hogan Park

The four-day tournament sees the older generation of golfers passing the torch to the younger generation.

MIDLAND, Texas — It was a picture perfect day at Hogan Park Golf Course on Monday.

The perfect atmosphere for women to gather for the 61st Annual Midland Women's City Golf Tournament.

Almost anyone can join and usually, the more golfers on the course means a merrier time for everyone else.

“It's open to everyone," tournament chairwoman Bonnie Ray said. "It's in Midland County, so we would like as many people, if you can establish your handicap, you can come play in this tournament. It's as simple as that.”

However, one thing has remained constant throughout the tournament's storied history: the older generation of golfers mingling and forming bonds with the younger generation.

All while introducing them to the game of golf.

“The tournament has grown very strong. It seems golf is becoming more interesting as we go, but just keeping these young girls alive and bringing them up into the game of golf... they grew up in Midland where there's not a lot to do," Ray said. "So the fact that they're on the golf course is just impressive.”

Seeing the younger generation not only hit the links, but excel at it is a symbolic passing of the torch from one generation to the next.

“It's so great to get them outside nowadays. The kids are always indoors and nowadays to get them out and meet these people out on the golf course...they learn quick," Ray said. "They can carry the game on for the rest of their lives and their our future in golf.”

Golf, however, is not always about who shoots under par or who gets their name on the trophy.

“It's not just playing the sport, it's who you're playing with as well," Ray said. "You always look forward to your foursome that you're gonna go play with or who you get paired with and it you know, it brings out a lot of great friendships.”

Golf is not just a game for the individual.

Man or woman, young or old, anyone can pick up a club and play a round of golf.

“Who doesn't love to be in a manicured setting? On top of getting to play a sport that is just for everyone and your family?" Ray said. "Everyone can play the game of golf and the game is carried on through these young kids, that's what it's all about.”
