AUSTIN, Texas — Coahoma claims the 2024 3A State Championship with its 3-2 win in eight innings over Grandview on Thursday in Austin.
The Bulldogettes win back-to-back state titles for the first time in program history and finish the year a perfect 32-0.
This was the second day in a row that the reigning state champions forced an extra innings contest.
The Lady Zebras struck first in the bottom of the first. Madi Doty tacked the first couple runs on the board with a two-run home run to left field for the 2-0 advantage.
The Bulldogettes responded immediately at the top of the second. Bree Lewis tied the game up at two with a two RBI single and that's where the score would stay through the rest of regulation with the help of the defensive efforts from both teams. Nevaeh Kerby and Lewis combined for multiple double plays to close out innings for the Basin team.
Coahoma wasted no time in extra innings. Mia Clemmer jumpstarted the attack with a base hit, representing the game-tying run. Then, Brynn Rodgers delivered the RBI double for the 3-2 lead.
The defense held up on the other end of the frame with Rodgers claiming the final out. The senior was later named the State Championship Game MVP.
"I just knew that I had to pick my team up in some kind of way. I knew that, me being a senior, I had to lead, and that's what I did," Rodgers said post-game.
