MIDLAND, Texas — The Midland Christian boys' basketball team are officially the state champions of TAPPS 5A. This comes after defeating The Woodlands Christian in the championship game on Saturday by a score of 55-39.
MCS made it to the state tournament in the Waco area after a perfect record in district play and two wins in the first two rounds of the playoffs, leading up to Friday's matchup in the semifinal round against top-ranked Austin Saint Michael's, who ended the Mustangs' playoff run in the semis a year ago.
This year, Midland Christian was able to top St. Michael's, winning by four points on Friday to set up Saturday's title game against The Woodlands Christian.
The Mustangs enjoyed a much more comfortable win in the championship round, beating fifth-ranked Woodlands Christian by sixteen points, leading at the end of each quarter.
MCS, lead by ninth year head coach Chris Ryburn, grabs their first boys' basketball state title since 2008. The team includes five seniors: Cason Prewitt, Tristan Camacho, Andrew Fox, Josiah Wray and Zach Day.
