'We love to talk about water' | Keep Midland Beautiful gives homeowners tips about water conservation

Keep Midland Beautiful offers water kits, provided by the city, that include five minute shower timers, a rain drip gauge, a digital moisture thermometer and more.

MIDLAND, Texas — In both Midland and Odessa, the water restrictions are on a voluntary basis, but that doesn't mean people still shouldn't be conscious of their water usage.

In the Permian Basin, 100-degree-heat is the norm, and so is watering the lawn.

Even with those types of temperatures, homeowners should always monitor how much water is being used.

"Your lawn just really requires like an inch of water per week," said Joy Paulson, Keep Midland Beautiful's (KMB) executive director. "I know that doesn't sound believable, but it is what we tell them."

KMB wants residents near and far to be aware of a few tips to ensure their plants have a hydrated summer.

First, think about other streams of water like when it rains or when people wash the dishes.

"When it rains, make sure you have like buckets to catch that rain for future use," Paulson said. "I mean dishwater, I know people think it's poisonous to plants, but actually it's pretty good. Conserve that water for that as well."

There is also another kit with a five minute shower timer and a high efficiency shower head that the children are known to enjoy.

"The kids get into competition, who's going to take the least amount of time with the shower," Paulson said. "The kids get really involved, you get them while they're young, you educate them and they educate their brothers, sisters, classmates and their families."

If DIY isn't a person's style, go to a local organization like KMB for all the facts on water conservation.

"We have tons of information on conserving water," Paulson said. "We also have literature on composting. Composting is also a good water conservation measure. We have on yard care lawn care on how to water and the proper amount that you need."

However people choose to conserve water, Paulson and KMB urge them to "come in, get a water kit, let's talk water."
