The piece of space junk came from the International Space Station and was supposed to burn up during reentry. It didn't and hit a home in Naples, Florida.

HOUSTON — A Florida family is filing a lawsuit against NASA after a piece of space junk hit their home.

It happened back in March of this year. The homeowner said he got a call from his son, saying an object crashed through the roof, causing serious damage.

Now that Florida family is suing NASA for the damages.

NASA confirmed one month later that the debris was ejected from the space station back in 2021 and was supposed to burn up in the atmosphere. According to the space agency, it was a piece of support made of a metal alloy that was used to mount batteries on the cargo pallet. NASA said it weighs 1.6 pounds and is four inches high and has a 1.6-inch diameter.
