The suspect in the shooting has not yet been identified and remains at large. However, Warren Strain, a spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, says the suspect is no longer believed to be on the campus.

He would not say how investigators reached that conclusion or say where the suspect is believed to be.

The 3,500-student university is in Cleveland, in Mississippi's Delta region near the Arkansas-Mississippi state line.

Authorities say they believe the suspect in the shooting of a university professor in Mississippi is no longer on the campus.

Warren Strain, spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, says the suspect is no longer believed to be on the Delta State University campus. He did not immediately elaborate, and it was not clear how investigators reached that conclusion. The suspect's possible whereabouts also were not immediately clear.

Meanwhile, investigators have been sweeping buildings on campus to look for the suspect, who officials say killed a professor in his office. The officer has not been identified.

Bill Hays, an English professor at Delta State University, says a SWAT team checked his office Monday while looking for the shooter. Another professor, Don Allan Mitchell, says officers were sweeping buildings as helicopters circled overhead.

The campus remains on lockdown with the shooter on the loose.
