City of Midland approves final phase of Garfield St. construction

The construction includes a roundabout at the intersection of Garfield and Cuthbert.

MIDLAND, Texas — The City of Midland approved the last phase of construction on Garfield Street Tuesday.

The construction includes a roundabout at the intersection of Garfield and Cuthbert. It's been closed off for utility work, and once it's done, construction on the roundabout will start.

"The intersection is offset and left a lot of drivers finding other ways to get around," said Gabe McClelland, Midland Director of Engineering. "We had a lot of folks queued up and waiting to progress through the intersection, and they were cutting through neighborhoods. So when folks are cutting through neighborhoods, we look for options or alternatives to fix that problem and make our neighborhoods just a little bit safer."

The utility work is expected to take around two months. After that, it will take nearly seven months to build the roundabout.

The Garfield project is part of a road bond passed by Midlanders in 2017, which included 26 roads. The city told us previously the Garfield project was pushed back for several different reasons, but construction got underway in 2022.
