Midkiff and Cotton Flat bridges set to open

Demolition of the former Midkiff and Cotton Flat bridges began in the middle of 2023.

Drivers traveling along I-20 will encounter changes in traffic this week.

The Midkiff and Cotton Flat bridges have reached substantial completion, and the new I-20 mainline bridges are scheduled to open on Saturday, July 13. Interstate traffic will now utilize Midkiff Road and Cotton Flat Road using these newly constructed bridges, acording to Texas Department of Transportation. 

The Texas Department of Transportation further added that during this transition, drivers are advised to explore alternate routes if feasible. All lanes are anticipated to be fully operational by Sunday, July 14.

Specifically, Midkiff Road at I-20: Both directions of Midkiff Road are slated to open no later than Tuesday, July 16. 

Cotton Flat Road at I-20: One lane in each direction on Cotton Flat Road will be accessible no later than July 26. Temporary stop signs will be in place until signals are installed at the frontage road intersections.

Demolition of the former Midkiff and Cotton Flat bridges began in the middle of 2023. It was reported that Midkiff bridge project cost $36.3 million and the Cotton Flat bridge cost $68.5 million.
