TEXAS, USA — As snow begins to fall in the Permian Basin, ice building up on the roads has a high probability of causing issues for drivers.
If you can't stay home during inclement weather, here are some tips for how to stay safe.
When driving on icy roads, be sure not to use cruise control. This will allow you to stay in better control of your car if you start to slide.
Make sure to keep extra distance between you and the car in front of you, and allow proper time to brake and accelerate at a slow speed to avoid collisions.
If you do start to slide when driving, make sure to stay calm and steer into the direction you are skidding.
Another element to consider is making sure that your car is safe before setting out.
Make sure to check your tires, your car battery and windshield wipers to make sure they are in good shape.
It is also recommended to keep an emergency road kit in your car in case you get stuck or stranded.
TxDOT has been working to prep major roads for the winter weather, but being cautious regardless is the best tip for staying safe on icy roads.
