TxDOT launches safety campaign in oil and gas production areas

Nearly half of all Texas traffic deaths come from places like the Permian Basin.

TEXAS, USA — In an effort to reduce traffic deaths, TxDOT is launching a safety campaign in high oil and gas production areas.

Places like the Permian Basin account for nearly half of all traffic deaths.

Drivers in these areas are urged to give trucks plenty of space, as well as employ usual good driving practices such as avoiding distractions, not speeding and using a seat belt.

In 2018, there were 49,410 traffic crashes across the Permian Basin. Of these, 485 people were killed and 1,321 were seriously injured.

To spread the word on staying safe in high-traffic areas, TxDOT will be going to events across the Permian Basin. Drivers will be able to enjoy an interactive exhibit featuring games, quizzes and videos.

The first night the road show will be available is November 1 at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland.

Other events will pop up across the Permian Basin and other energy sector areas. For more information on the campaign you can visit TxDOT's website.
