Declining gas prices in Midland-Odessa lead to more holiday travel

More than 8.3 million people across Texas will be taking advantage of lower prices

MIDLAND, Texas — With the price of gas in Midland and Odessa dropping since last month, now may be the best time to drive during the holiday season to see friends and family.

Joshua Zuber, a Texas AAA representative, goes into more detail about the change in price at the pump.

“As we're looking into what's going on with gas prices around the Midland-Odessa area, we are seeing those prices on the decline. So $2.84 for a gallon of unleaded in Midland and $2.80 in Odessa," Zuber said. "We were closer to three dollars last week and last month, we were basically up to $3.25 for a gallon of unleaded fuel.”

Meanwhile, Zuber mentioned that more and more Texans will be packing their families into their cars and driving for Christmas.

"Of course, with declining gas prices, folks might be more inspired to get out there and travel for the year end holiday period," Zuber said. "AAA Texas is anticipating that nearly 8.3 million Texans will be driving to their destination of up to 50 miles or more as we get to that year-end holiday period.”

It is currently unknown how long this period of declining prices will continue. Factors such as the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russian oil means that gas prices can fluctuate.

For now, however, look to prices to stay the same or go down a little more in the short-term future.

“Typically we do see those gas prices decrease, we see overall demand for fuel begin to taper off, colder weather settles in but overall, where gas prices are going to go, that is a difficult question," Zuber said.
