MIDLAND, Texas — Holiday travel is in full swing, and airports across the country, including Midland International, are buzzing with activity. The airport has had a record-breaking year for flights, and with the holidays here, it’s busier than ever. While the chaos of holiday travel might seem unavoidable, a little planning can make your trip smooth and stress-free.
Timing is Everything
Director of Midland Airports, Justine Ruff explained that, gone are the days when travelers could arrive 20 minutes before their flight. She urges passengers to plan ahead.
"If you're flying out, you need to be here two hours before," Ruff said."
For those unfamiliar with air travel, patience and understanding go a long way.
"There's a lot of people who travel this time of year who are not seasoned travelers. This is the only time of year they travel, and they tend to be a little slower,” an Ruff explained. “Give grace—there are a lot of people.”
Skip the Line With TSA PreCheck
Tired of long TSA lines? TSA PreCheck might be your ticket to a faster experience.
"We have four PreCheck clinics scheduled next year, and one happening right now where you can sign up,” Ruff added. “PreCheck gets you into a shorter line and helps reduce the wait.”
For more information, visit TSA.gov to sign up or check the identification requirements. Walk-ins are currently being accepted.
Avoid Wrapping Gifts Before Flying
Another tip for holiday travelers: leave your Christmas gifts unwrapped.
Ruff advised that, “The TSA will have to unwrap your gifts. I’ve seen them try to carefully put them back together, but it just adds time for you and everyone else in line."
Expect Crowded Parking
Parking at the airport is another hurdle to plan for.
“We anticipate maxing out parking and may have to open an overflow lot, which we’ve done before. If you’re handicapped, don’t worry—handicapped spots are often available. Use the call button in the booth for assistance,” Ruff suggested.
Busiest Travel Times
As for peak travel hours, travelers should expect delays during specific days and times.
“Thursday and Friday mornings and afternoons are typically the busiest. However, this week may differ due to the holiday rush,” Ruff explained.
Stay Optimistic—Just Like Midland International
Despite the challenges of holiday travel, Midland International Airport remains optimistic.
“It’s a good problem to have. As we grow and more people fly, we’re working to accommodate everyone,” Ruff shared.
With a little preparation and patience, holiday travel can be smooth, simple, and even enjoyable. From NewsWest 9 to you, happy holidays and safe travels!
