Booking hotel rooms tricky amid winter weather in West Texas

NewsWest 9 could not confirm any reports of price gouging, despite people making those claims on social media.

MIDLAND, Texas — Have you ever tried sleeping in 30-40 degree temperatures for two nights, going on three?

Well that is what some folks in West Texas are dealing with during this massive power outage.

That is why many have resorted to staying in hotels.

But there is a problem there, too. Not all hotels have power and those that do, many of them are booked.

All around, it seems to be a mess for people just trying to find a warm place to sleep at night.

For the Fischer family, WoodSpring Suites is their home for the week.

“Sunday night our power out and we’ve been without power like everyone else, so we booked a hotel," Renee Fischer, Midland resident, said. "We booked one yesterday in Odessa at the FunDome through Hotels.com”

Fischer says that was a mistake.

“We went to check-in and once we got to the desk there they had already given away our room and weren’t honoring the third party reservation," Fischer said.

NewsWest 9 called the MCM Grande Hotel & Fun Dome to see why that is, and they declined to comment.

“I cried honestly because then we had to go back last night and stay in an RV," Fischer said. "We were around a generator someone let us borrow, with a little heater. We were all huddled around that for the night...it was pretty bad.”

As for Hotels.com, they refunded Fischer but she does not want anyone else to go through the same experience.

“Anyone watching this I would just not go through a third party right now, go to the hotel in person and book a room because it might not work online,” Fischer said.

As for hotel prices? They are very average for the area.

NewsWest 9 could not confirm any reports of price gouging, despite people making those claims on social media.

If you need a hotel to stay in for the night: go directly there to book.

Now even though the Fischers got a room, the WoodSpring Suites ended up losing power this afternoon. Even so, it was warm and the Fischers are happy.
