Grass fires near Andrews contained

Nearly 40 mile an hour winds caused the grass fires, located near Highway 115, to spread.

ANDREWS, Texas — UPDATE: The Andrews County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday that the flames near Andrews were contained by around 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

Crews are battling grass fires near Highway 115.

At this time there is no word on how big the fires are or how much they are contained.

However, flames are about five miles away from the town.

NewsWest 9 has a reporter at the scene, who says there is a lot of smoke covering the area.

Winds speeds near 40 miles per hour are also causing the fires to spread.

The Andrews Volunteer Fire Department is joined by Goldsmith and Gardendale volunteer crews, as well as Odessa Fire Rescue. The latter groups are heading to the area of CR 4000 and CR 3001.

According to the Texas Division of Emergency Management, no state assistance has been requested as of 4:45 p.m.
