Midland County explains what actually happened when the courthouse flooded

The Midland County Courthouse reopened Thursday after being closed for three days due to flooding. Director of Facilities explained what caused the flood.

MIDLAND, Texas — The Midland County Courthouse is back open Thursday after flooding throughout the courthouse caused it to close.

Thursday morning, Midland County was able to explain what caused the flooding.

NewsWest 9 learned that the frigid temperatures did not cause a sprinkler head to fail.

The head of facilities told NewsWest 9 that there were no frozen pipes, so they're still looking into why that sprinkler head went off and flooded the lobby area.

NewsWest 9 also found out that the flooding only affected the first floor of the building.

The county is still in the process of drying, removing damage and remodeling.

"A lot of repairs would be, we removed sheetrock, we put the sheetrock back," Director of Facilities and Operation Eddie Melendez said. "Painting. Putting cove base back. It's extensive throughout the first floor."

The county doesn't have an estimate yet on how much the damage cost.

Currently, there's still some areas of the first floor that are closed down, but they hope to have the courthouse back open Friday.

County commissioners are expected to have their meeting the week of Jan. 22 and other courts are rescheduling.
