Kermit Junior High assistant principal charged with using excessive force on a child by hitting him with a wooden paddle, records show

In a Winkler County Sheriff's Office arrest report, it says David Gonzales Leija, Kermit Junior High assistant principal, was charged with injury to a child.

KERMIT, Texas — Arrest records obtained by NewsWest 9 state that Kermit Junior High Assistant Principal David Gonzales Leija has been charged with injury to a child reckless bodily injury.

The arrest record states that Leija used excessive force on a child 14 years of age or younger by striking him in the "buttocks with a wooden paddle".

A case was made aware to WCSO on Nov. 27 and then an arrest was executed on Dec. 1.

You may remember that Kermit ISD released a statement on Dec. 1 about a campus administrator being put on leave, stemming from a "previous student disciplinary matter"

The Winkler County Sheriff's Office told NewsWest 9 that they "believe" Leija is the same campus administrator they are talking about in the statement.

Leija is currently on a $10,000 bond.

NewsWest 9 has reached out to the school for comment but we have not gotten a response back.
