BIG SPRING, Texas — Prom is the biggest night of the year for most high school students, but the price tag that comes with dressing up can rob some students of the special occasion.
The Prom Closet is a nonprofit organization that's based out of Big Spring. Throughout the past 10 years, it's provided free dresses, gowns, shoes and accessories to countless girls and women.
"Prom is a special occasion and right now everything is expensive, and so are prom dresses," said Eddilisa Ray, one of the organization's leaders and the grant manager for the North Side Movement. "It's one less worry for any high school girl or parent to have and we're happy to offer that.
Most of the items the non-profit has available have been donated by members of the community, churches in West Texas and boutiques.
"Big Spring has always come to the aid of others," Ray said. "We're always such a good community and we step up when there's a need."
Currently, The Prom Closet carries dozens of dresses that vary from sizes 0 to 12. They also have heels, jewelry and even some attire for boys.
According to Ray, the organization wants to expand its inventory through donations that include plus-size clothing and mirrors for its fitting room.
Ray and her mother took leadership of the nonprofit organization back in 2013. They realized that their community lacked a resource that could help women and girls find just the right dress, at no cost at all.
Though the organization is based out of Howard County, The Prom Closet is open all year-round for any special occasion and for anyone in need of the 'perfect dress'.
