According to a Saturday morning news release, Andrews County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to serve a felony arrest warrant for indecency with a child charge, at a residence in the 900 Block of Southwest Fifth Street.

There, authorities made contact with 31-year-old Ricardo Infante Jr., who police say was inside the residence.

"While attempting to take Infante into custody a struggle ensued. During the struggle a knife was used to stab one Andrews County Sheriff’s Deputy and one Andrews County Fire Marshall’s Officer," the joint release said. "It was at this time that one Andrews Police Department Officer discharged their duty weapon striking the suspect. First aid was rendered to both injured officers and Infante. Infante did pass away on scene."

No other injures were reported in course of the incident.

As of press time, "the injured deputy was flown out to an area hospital for emergency surgery, which was successful and is in stable condition. The Fire Marshall’s Officer was treated and released from Permian Regional Medical Center. The other Sheriff’s Deputy and Andrews Police Department officer were also treated for minor injuries and are okay, as their ballistic vests protected them from more serious injuries."

The investigation is now being handled by the Texas Rangers and involved deputies and officers will be on administrative leave "which is standard protocol," the release said.
