Election do's and don'ts for November's ballot

Both Midland and Ector County election administrators have rules that are put in place for the benefit of voters.

MIDLAND, Texas —

One of the most important rules at voting centers is that the use of electronic devices like phones are prohibited within 100 feet of a voting center.

"We want everyone to have the same opportunity as everyone else. We want the vote centers to be quiet, we want them to not be disruptive," Rosa Olgin, elections administrator for Midland County, said. "We don't want people taking selfies by the machines or by their ballot. That can be very disruptive to the public."

If voters have their cheat sheets for voting on their phone, that information should be transferred to a piece of paper before coming to vote.

And with Midland ISD and Greenwood ISD on the ballot, section 61.010 of the Texas Election Code will affect voters employed by the school systems.

They are asking that school district employees be mindful of their attire when they come in to vote.

“After speaking with the Secretary of State, they gave us a little bit of clarification on that. They did tell us that the plain MISD logo is okay," Olgin said. "As long as there’s nothing to do with the bond on it. Midland High Baseball, Legacy High Football, anything like that [on a shirt] is okay.”

NewsWest 9 reached out to Ector County as well and according to their election's administrator, the rules are similar to Midland County except school district employees aren’t allowed to wear ECISD shirts at all.

Whether you’re voting in either Ector or Midland County, both election administrators say school district badges are also prohibited and should be left in your car, purse or bag.
