Cold weather causes issues in both Midland and Odessa

The cold weather in the north part of the Permian Basin caused water main breaks in Odessa and flooding from pipes in the Midland County Courthouse.

From water main breaks in Odessa to pipe issues at the Midland County Courthouse, the cold weather wreaked havoc on both cities and officials are already working to fix the issues.

Around Sunday afternoon, the City of Odessa's utilities department reported experiencing above average water main breaks.

On Monday morning, water was still running from the water main lines that broke in areas over the City of Odessa.

The city responded to them quickly by making the necessary repairs and rerouting water. Some areas in the city were experiencing low water pressure or brief outages.

However, in the early afternoon of Monday, an official with the City of Odessa told Newswest 9 that there were no active line breaks.

Odessa wasn't the only city experiencing some issues from the chilly weather outside.

Monday morning in Midland, Abell Junior High had a water leak that could have been a result of the weather, according to workers at the school's site.

The workers did tell Newswest 9 that the leak was fixed.

The Midland County Courthouse is continuing to experience flooding issues due to the fire extinguisher system's pipes being damaged, causing a leak. The flooding has caused county officials to cancel the Commissioners Court meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

The City of Midland told NewsWest 9 that the courthouse will be closed Tuesday due to extensive damage within the building.

Midland County plans to reopen the courthouse on Jan. 17 at 8 a.m.
